Leather Cleaning Tips: MicroFiber cloths are excellent for cleaning leather. Get a bucket with water only. Dip the cloth in the water and wring out. Fold cloth in 1/2, gives you 4 areas to work with. Lay cloth on area you are going to clean. Put one hand on the cloth and push lightly down, then pull with your other hand. Turn cloth over, do next area etc using a clean cloth area so when you done all the sides of the cloth you dip it in bucket and wring out and start over folding in 1/2 etc. After dipping and rinsing the cloth a few times you should really see how the water is getting more and more soiled. Once the pre-cleaning is done it's time to use the leather cleaner and conditioner. Apply the chemical on a new, clean microfiber cloth. Start in an unsuspicious area first. If you see no color transfer continue repeating the task until done. Finish off by using a 3rd microfiber cloth to polish the sofa. You're done. Now you can put the microfiber cloths into the washing machine and use them over and over again for any type of cleaning you have in mind for next project.

Core Leather cleaners are designed for use on pigmented smooth leather (also referred to as protected leather, finished leather, semi-aniline, everyday, or coated). The pictures above give you a general idea of what type of leather is D.I.Y. cleanable. I sometimes say:" if it looks like it needs a shoe shine - you can do it yourself!"

Other specialized leather materials such as aniline, unprotected, NuBuck or suede are a more specialized segment of the overall market, requiring other specialty products than shown here. For more in depth information click here.

Protected leather can often be identified by lightly scratching the surface with a fingernail in a concealed area, and note whether it leaves a scratch mark. If the scratch mark color remains the same and does not dry to a lighter color - then it is protected.

Overall, protected or pigmented leather should have somewhat of a sheen. Any leather cleaner applied onto the surface should remain on top and not discolor or darken the leather.
